Architectural Character Design Objectives
  • To achieve a development that establishes the highest quality design level.
  • To set environmental bechmarks for design in the region.
  • To create a responsive architecture - to site, cultural context, tropical climate, environment, views and function that draws on archetypical Malaysian architectural forms and the elements of good tropical architecture.
  • To establish a dynamic architectural character that is both distinctive, contemporary and inspired by its Malaysian context.
  • To achieve an appropriate scale and provide architectural definition to public spaces, streets and the waterfront.
  • To provide rich and interesting architectural outcomes across the development.

The primary aim for the architectural expression of the Queensbay Waterfront master plan is to draw on the inspiration of the site, local context and climate. Deep eaves, shading structures, screening and pergolas are to be encouraged with the aesthetic drawing on archetypical Malaysian architectural forms expressed in a contemporary manner.

Architectural + Landscape Integration
The buildings would have a permeable nature typical to buildings within a tropical environment. They would not feel hermetically sealed but give the occupants access to the 'outside'. The buildings would also be visually permeable, exploiting the highly structured landscape and waterfront aspect.

Material
A consistent palette of materials is an important means by which the different architectural elements in each precint are drawn together to present a coherent unified signature statement for the overall development. The aim of the material usage across the site is to develop a common palette that connects the development but allows for a variety of architectural expression across the master plan. The patina of a material, the ability for it to be self cleaning to mitigate mould and pollution build up and its character over time would all be considered to enable an outcome that will foster a timeless quality to the development without creating a sterile environment. An architecture that ages beautifully and reinforces the quality of the landscape within which it sits would be promoted through material choice at all times.
